          The role of Mohandas Karamchand (Mahatma) Gandhi in the psyche of Indian independence is often problematic. On the one hand, due to the hegemony of the Indian National Congress and particularly the Gandhi-Nehru family, in the political and administrative set-up of independent India has often meant the crowding out of other, non-Gandhian figures from the narrative of the Indian freedom struggle.
