Biography
Tsiranana was born in Ambarikorano, in the Mahajanga region, on October 28, 1912 (according to most sources; other sources cite October 18 or even 1910 as the date of birth), the son of breeders of cattle.
He studied at the University of Montpellier in France between 1946 and 1950. In France, he was one of the founders of the Parti des déshérités de Madagascar (Party of the Disinherited of Madagascar), of socialist ideology.
In 1952, he returned to Madagascar. Distanced from the leaders of the Party of the Disinherited, he founded the Parti Social Démocrate de Madagascar (PSM, Social Democratic Party of Madagascar) in 1956. In 1958, he became prime minister of the territory of Madagascar and the June 26, 1960, with the proclamation of independence, he became the first president of the
